Red Dawn

Well I am off to Elk Springs to shut the place up for the winter. Unless the shit really hits the fan like THIS (one of the cheesy 80's flicks) and then I may open it back up. Lets see.......

MRE's.........check
water supply.........check
off the grid cabin.......check
guns and plenty of ammo.......check
buying up gold and selling off stocks...........check
generator and fuel supply....check
Thinking we are headed for the end of days...........check
Barometer............Check (Post disclaimer)

Think I am crazy? we will see.

I sure as hell do not like all the stuff going on lately, and we don't seem to have anyone at the wheel. I will just use the old boyscout motto "Be prepared". This Cat don't think I am nuts.........

Back in the 1970's and old family friend built this rifle for a friend of his. He had built many beautiful rifles including one for then Governor Ronald Reagan. When he died I was given the opportunity to purchase it at a very reduced price.

Needless to say many years ago I was hard up for money and sold it to a good friend of mine. After all these years he was kind enough to sell it back. So I have this retro piece of art back home.

It is a Centurion Model 123, 30.06 manufactured by Golden State Arms of Pasadena California. Mauser Action with a 4x14 Nikon scope that I added this weekend. A terrific tiger stipe wood thumbhole stock from Africa. I shot my first elk with it at 220 yards. I do not hunt anymore, but it will be fun to punch paper with it.

The Foreigner's Gift

512Z4HVFKNL__AA240_.jpg

I just finished reading The Foreigner's Gift by Fouad Ajami. The book is based on Ajami's first hand observations after six trips to post Hussein Iraq. It is a lucid and somewhat objective view of the current state of affairs there. Niether glowing in optimism or a condemnation, I find the book an interesting look at the fluid dynamics of the Shia-Sunni struggle to find their place. At times the book lags and strays, but it is well worth the read and is on par with V.S. Naipaul's Among the Believers and yes even Thomas Friedman's From Beruit to Jerusalem. Ajami explores the painful transition from liberator to army of occupation the Americans face and looks to the future with cautious insight into the Arab mind.
